Kachemak Charters is a family affair and the culmination of years of experience and preparation to make it all happen. Denise and Jim welcome you to their dream with the goal of providing you endless memories of a grand experience in the wilds of Alaska.
Although Kachemak Charters and the Sunny Side Up are new to Homer, Jim has piloted the waters of Cook Inlet since 1985. Jim earned his 100 ton Masters License in 1990 after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, including being stationed right here in Homer aboard the USCG Cutter Sedge (since decommissioned). Jim guided and chartered out of Homer and the surrounding area until the pull of a different career led him astray. Now much the wiser, he is picking up where he left off-providing amazing fishing and nautical adventures back where he belongs-Homer, Alaska. Fishing, hunting and almost anything outdoors are Jim’s passions, and that passion drives Jim to provide adventures that meet his high expectations.
Denise works behind the scenes and makes sure that everything needed to ensure a great experience has been considered, provisioned, and is executed to her standards. Denise is an accomplished sportswoman and has fished and hunted all over the Western United States, Canada and Alaska and she knows what it takes to provide a great adventure.
We focus our operation on fun, done safely. To that end, youngsters and the young at heart will likely experience incredible firsts: first halibut, first ling, first night spent in a cove in the middle of nowhere Alaska… first something.
ABOUT THE BOAT
The Sunny Side Up is a 43 foot Egg Harbor Sportfisherman yacht designed for providing world-class comfort in pursuit of big fish. For those lucky enough to have been blue water fishing off the East Coast, Bahamas, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Australia, Hawaii or other sport fishing destination, you know what a sportfishing yacht is all about. If you have never experienced this, you deserve to treat yourself to a trip of a lifetime.
The Sunny Side Up sleeps four guests in comfort, is air conditioned, and has a fantastic all teak salon to sit back and relax in after a day’s fishing while dinner is being prepared in the galley. She carries ample fuel for those long trips, and is powered by two big diesels to get us where we are going quickly and safely.
The bridge is outfitted with all the electronics for safe navigation and to find the fish and is spacious enough for all to gather and watch the whales, sea otters, puffins, and the endless scenic vistas that cruising is all about. There is even a tuna tower that lends itself to an even better vista. Just don’t be afraid of heights, because it is way up there!
In the cockpit, you will find a very spacious area for everyone to have plenty of room to fish. The Sunny Side Up is outfitted with quality equipment, including downriggers, outriggers, and other fishing gear; anything and everything needed to provide a great experience for our guests.

Kachemak Charters is committed to providing a great adventure and fun, but safety is priority number one. To provide the safest adventure possible, your captain is trained way beyond the USCG requirements and has the experience to have utilized the training.
The Sunny Side Up is equipped with redundant navigation equipment including a chart plotter, separate GPS system, radar, sonar and multiple VHF radios. Additionally, on board is a satellite telephone and other communications devices, including an EPIRB to keep in contact with the outside world, if need be. The Sunny Side Up carries a small boat on the fore deck, which provides us the ability to go ashore if desired. The small boat also serves as our life boat in the unlikely event of needing one. On our trips exceeding three days, we will likely bring a second, 14’ inflatable boat, to facilitate even more adventures.
Your captain is CPR/AED and Basic First Aid certified, and has previously certified in Wilderness First Aid and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). The Sunny Side Up carries an incredibly comprehensive first aid kit, an AED, a trauma kit and other first aid equipment.
Besides having earned a 100 Ton Masters License in 1990, your captain was also a certified coxswain in the USCG and operated patrol boats in some of the worst conditions conducting search and rescue operations, including underway medivac operations, with helicopters.
The experience and training of your captain, coupled with top-shelf equipment, insures the capabilities and capacities to safely handle any situation that may arise, and is your assurance of a safe and fun adventure.
Please realize weather and other factors can create delays that are outside of Kachemak Charters’ control. We highly recommend that flexibility be built into all plans in Alaska. We never leave port if conditions are such that your adventure will not be fun; for your enjoyment and safety.
We provide quality fishing gear, including SEiGLER reels and Lamiglas rods. All bait, lures, jigs and terminal tackle are also provided.
We fish with Spectra super lines that dramatically decrease the amount of weight needed to get your hooks down to where the fish are. Gone are the days of 4, even 6 pounds of lead to keep your bait on the bottom due to the tremendous currents created by the tides.
If you want to bring your own gear, please feel free to bring it. For our Ultra-long range trips to Shuyak, Raspberry, and Afognak Islands, fly and spin fishermen/women should plan to bring their own favorite rods and reels and experience the thrill of silver salmon in freshwater or fishing from shore. Please bring hip/chest waders on these trips!
If you are seeking an IGFA record, you supply the rod, reel and line and we will provide the rest of the equipment to make landing that record setting fish IGFA compliant-including flying gaffs.Follow us on:
